Lorenzo Matteoli, Some thoughts “ahead” for “my vision for Midland” (second draft)

1. No traffic on the surface of the New Midland: cars, trains and trucks to be placed “under the blanket”;

2. Instead of excavating to put parking lots and train tracks underground the idea is to cover with a platform all the parking lots and the train tracks. On the “platform”, which I would call “Level One Blanket” L1B, a green linear park with meeting places, piazzas, sport areas (tennis, Basket, BMX, skateboard bowls, minigolf, cycle path…)

3. The L1B will be “cut around” existing buildings (the Railway Workshops) to leave wide spaces also treated with greenery;

4. The parking under the L1B will be connected with the local/regional road network via proper connecting shafts (North South East West): a specific study of traffic circulation should be part of the design studio;

5. Surface mobility served by electric minubus, bycicles, electric rikshaws, single user power driven mobility devices, to connect residences, offices, services, regional transportation terminals…

6. The L1B will be equipped with “holes” to allow large trees to be planted in the ground and to allow light and amenities under the blanket (like grenery, water, sun light);

7. Midland shall be designed for third generation electric cars (Tesla) the car-fleet will supply the storage for the solar and wind energy generators and shall be fed by solar and wind energy only;

8. Midland shall be designed to be 100% ewnergy autonomous storage provided by fly wheels (Beacon technology) fed by solar PV and wind generators: a special study for the Midland Energy Model should be supplied by the Desiugn Studio (Energy Demand, Energy Supply, Storage capacity and technology)

9. Residences placed on a structural “zigurrat” (structural artificial hills) up to 12 or 14 storeys high (or higher) with terraces, balconies, lookouts, green jogging walkways, gangways, bridges, ramps…

10. The structural platform of the L1B and the cost of the GGEB (Great Green Elevated Boulevard) should be compared to the cost of building new tracks around Midland. The benefit of a quality urban environment should be estimated. Criteria for evaluation to be proposed.

11. If the option to move the Railway Tracks around Midland is chosen the Metro Line Tracks should be placed underground and the Great Green Boulevard should be kept at ground level. The parking lots should go underground: a study of the various options could be part of the design studio.

12. Pedestrian walkways on the surface should be cooled by passive systems (cfr. Siviglia Expo).
